Life tends to do this, and you can't maintain them all. But I still have my 3 closest childhood friends in my thirties. We still hang out, drink beer, play games and help eachother out when stuff needs doing. So it's not impossible to keep it up!

I clearly remember one summer, I was 12 or 13, I was playing cards at the lake with my best friends on a sunny day and I thought: "How could this ever change? I bet we'll all be here when we'll be old, playing cards and messing around as we do today". Now 20 years have passed, I lost contact with most of them. But with a couple we are still close friends, even if we chose very different paths. I really cherish those friendships, and if they survived for 20 years, I think they'll stay forever. Problem is, now I'm battling with cancer, so I don't know if we'll be playing cards when we're old. I surely hope so. Or at least they can do it and have the memories of me with them, that still counts, right?

I grew up in a village and left my country (France) to build a life in Canada with my partner and our 3 months old daughter, knowing it was temporary for me. In the 10 years I spent there, I never took the time to rebuild the prime circle I had. Came back a month ago, alone, after a harsh divorce. Tonight, I'm celebrating my birthday with six of the closest friends I ever had and know I made the right choice coming back. Childhood friendships are for life, simply because children are often better judges of character than adults.
